The Teton Wilderness covers 585,468 acres in northwest Wyoming, adjacent to Yellostone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and the Shoshone National Forest's Washakie Wilderness. What is now the Teton Wilderness has long been recognized for its wild character. Set aside as a primitive area in 1934, it became one of the original units of the National Wilderness Preservation System upon passage of the 1964 Wilderness Act due to its wildlife resources, wild trout fishery, watershed values, and outstanding opportunity for multi-day pack trips. Ranging in elevation from about 7,500 to over 12,000 feet, the Teton Wilderness straddles the Continental Divide.
