Welcome to the Gros Ventre Wilderness, a wild area with a rich history, diverse wildlife, and unique geology. The wilderness covers 287,000 acres in northwest Wyoming, adjacent to Jackson and the National Elk Refuge. The Gros Ventre Wilderness is a youngster in the legal sense. It wasn't until 1984 that Congress incorporated the area into the National Wilderness Preservation System through passage of the Wyoming Wilderness Act, although proposals for its inclusion were developed as early as 1953.
